Style Rolls

Style rolls are used to help narrate dramatic sequences or actions that are taken when time does not play a factor. For these actions success is guaranteed, it is just a matter of figuring out how well/quickly you complete the task. They best way to think about this is that the victors write the history books, you are the victor so you are going to describe the scene with you in the best light. The Style Roll is what really happened. The end result is the same but the style roll will represent how it is actually recorded or viewed by others.

Example (Dramatic Scene).

  • Your explanation—I grab the damsel, vault the barrel landing gracefully on the steed and gallop off into the sunset as the building burns in the distance.
  • Good Style Roll—You grab the damsel, vault the barrel landing gracefully on the steed and gallop off into the sunset as the building burns in the distance.
  • Great Style Roll—You grab the damsel, vault the barrel landing gracefully on the steed, gallop off into the sunset, and the damsel comforts you through the night as the building burns in the distance.
  • Bad Style Roll—The damsel pulls you onto the horse after you fall while trying to leap a bench and you ride off with guards chasing you for days.
  • Really bad Style Roll—The damsel pulls your flaming body from the wreckage of the building since you were knocked out by the horse that you spooked by trying to vault onto it’s back.

Example (Time isn’t a factor).

  • Your explanation—I’m going to spend all my non adventuring time creating the greatest weapon of all time.
  • Good Style Roll—You create a beautifully ornate weapon that performs up to normal weapon standards.
  • Great Style Roll—You create a weapon so beautiful that you cringe every time you are forced to sully it with the blood of your foes (weapon may also gain a magical property or a special ability).
  • Bad Style Roll—You create one of the ugliest versions of your chosen weapon that has ever been seen, the good news is it works just like a normal version of the weapon it’s just ugly.
  • Really bad Style Roll—You create one of the ugliest versions of your chosen weapon that has ever been seen, the good news is it works just like a normal version of the weapon it’s just ugly. The bad news is that it took you 3 times longer than normal to make this “exquisite” weapon.
